Cropping images to the ratios platforms actually want

Cropping is how you hit a required aspect ratio without stretching. Here are the ratios that actually matter.

Cropping and resizing solve different problems and are often needed together. Resizing changes how big an image is. Cropping changes what is in it, and therefore its aspect ratio. When a platform demands a square image and yours is a wide photo, cropping is the only correct answer. Stretching it is not.

The reason to crop deliberately rather than let a platform do it: automatic crops take the centre, and the subject of a photograph is very often not in the centre. That is why profile pictures end up cropped through someone's forehead. ToolHub gives you ratio presets plus manual control, so you choose what stays.

Crop Image: the facts that matter

Common ratios1:1, 4:5, 16:9, 1.91:1, 9:16
Manual cropYes, free selection
Quality lossNone from the crop itself
OrderCrop, then resize, then compress
ReversibleNo. Cropped pixels are gone

How to do it, step by step

  1. 1Find the required aspect ratio. Square, 4:5, 16:9 and 1.91:1 cover most platforms.
  2. 2Open the crop tool in ToolHub.
  3. 3Select the ratio preset first, then position the frame. Doing it the other way round means redoing it.
  4. 4Position around the subject, not the centre of the image.
  5. 5Crop first, then resize, then compress. That order avoids compounding quality loss.
